Search is shifting from a page of blue links to a single AI-written answer. If your content is not inside that answer, the reader never sees you. Three findings explain why this is a right-now problem for every site and store owner.
AI crawlers read raw HTML and do not run JavaScript. In an analysis of over 500 million GPTBot fetches, the crawlers executed no JavaScript at all — so anything rendered client-side is invisible to them. Server-rendered content is the price of entry.
Optimizing for answer engines works, and it is measurable. The Princeton-led team behind the GEO framework found that answer engine optimization can lift a page's visibility in generative responses by up to 40%, with citations, quotations, and statistics among the most effective tactics. Recently updated content is favored, too.
